Lendinara

Lendinara

Of Roman origins, it was already acknowledged as a city in 1495, Lendinara is a concentration of beautiful villas, buildings and castle towers in Ferrarese and Venetian style.

Among the churches, the Cathedral of St. Sofia, St. Biagio and the Sanctuary of N.S. del Pilastrello (Our Lady of the Pilastrello) contain numerous works of art (canvases by Veronese, Tintoretto, Piazzetta, and Sebastiano Filippi).

It was the native land of illustrious personalities from the world of politics, science and art. Among the most famous is Lorenzo Canozio, wood-working artist, whose monastic grille in flowered gothic style is preserved in the 13th century municipal building.

Two elements in particular characterize the city: 1) its distinct participation in the events of the Italian Risorgimento, in particular with the figure of Alberto Mario, Garibaldi's general, and his English wife, Jessie White, whose tomb and home can be visited; 2) the presence of the most famous sanctuary of Polesine, the Beata Vergine del Pilastrello, commonly called the “Madonna Nera” (black Madonna), destination for pilgrims from all over Italy and where many antique votive offerings are preserved as testimony of the piety of the common people.

Lendinara
